Many women begin experiencing symptoms of perimenopause in their late 30s or 40s. Hormonal fluctuations can cause symptoms such as irregular periods, sleep disruption, anxiety, hot flashes, and changes in libido years before menopause officially occurs. Evaluation by a clinician experienced in menopause medicine can help determine whether your symptoms are related to hormonal changes and what treatment options may help.
-
For many healthy women, systemic menopausal hormone therapy is safe and effective when started before age 60 or within 10 years of menopause.
Some women may also be able to start therapy after age 60 or beyond 10 years since menopause, depending on their symptoms, overall health, and individual risk factors. Treatment decisions should always be personalized and made in consultation with a clinician experienced in menopause care.
Local vaginal estrogen, used to treat symptoms such as vaginal dryness and painful intercourse, is considered safe for most women at any age because systemic absorption is minimal.
-
Many women have been told they cannot take hormones based on outdated information or incomplete evaluation. While some medical conditions do make hormone therapy higher risk, many women can still safely use hormone therapy or alternative treatments.
If hormones are not appropriate, there are effective non-hormonal therapies available for symptoms such as hot flashes, sleep disruption, and low libido.
A thorough medical review can help determine the safest options for you.
-
Menopause symptoms vary widely but may include:
• Hot flashes
• Night sweats
• Sleep problems
• Brain fog
• Mood changes or anxiety
• Vaginal dryness
• Pain with intercourse
• Low libido
• Weight and metabolic changes
Symptoms may begin during perimenopause, which can occur years before menopause.
-
You may benefit from seeing a menopause specialist if:
• Your symptoms are significantly affecting quality of life
• Prior treatments have not worked
• You are unsure whether hormone therapy is right for you
• You have complex symptoms such as low libido or sleep disturbances
Specialized care can help tailor treatment to your specific symptoms and health history.
-
Many women begin noticing improvement within a few weeks of starting treatment, though full optimization often takes a few months.
-
Many women come to us feeling frustrated, dismissed, or confused about their symptoms. If that sounds familiar, we’re here to help.
